Without further ado, please join me in welcoming my friend, Mesu Andrews. Mesu’s sweet spirit shines through on the pages of her books. I marvel at her ability to breather life into  biblical settings.

ME--2015(2)Here’s her professional bio:

Mesu Andrews deep understanding of and love for God’s Word brings the biblical world alive for her readers. Her first novel, Love Amid the Ashes won the 2012 ECPA Book of the Year for a Debut Author. Her three subsequent novels, Love’s Sacred Song, Love in a Broken Vessel, and In the Shadow of Jezebel all released to great reader enthusiasm. Mesu lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband Roy.

And here’s the summary of her latest book:

Mesu Pharoah's Daughter coverAnippe has grown up in the shadows of Egypt’s good god Pharaoh, aware that Anubis, god of the afterlife, may take her or her siblings at any moment. She watched him snatch her mother and infant brother during childbirth, a moment which awakens in her a terrible dread of ever bearing a child. Now she is to be become the bride of Sebak, a kind but quick-tempered Captain of Pharaoh Tut’s army. In order to provide Sebak the heir he deserves and yet protect herself from the underworld gods, Anippe must launch a series of deceptions, even involving the Hebrew midwives—women ordered by Tut to drown the sons of their own people in the Nile.

When she finds a baby floating in a basket on the great river, Anippe believes Egypt’s gods have answered her pleas, entrenching her more deeply in deception and placing her and her son Mehy, whom handmaiden Miriam calls Moses, in mortal danger.

As bloodshed and savage politics shift the balance of power in Egypt, the gods reveal their fickle natures and Anippe wonders if her son, a boy of Hebrew blood, could one day become king. Or does the god of her Hebrew servants, the one they call El Shaddai, have a different plan—for them all?

Mesu has a few fascinating words to share for her EXCLUSIVE content that you’ll only find in this hunt, so read on!

3 Things That Might Surprise You About Moses

When I began research for The Pharaoh’s Daughter, I thought I knew Moses’s story pretty well. After all, I’d seen the Ten Commandments movie at least fifteen times and Disney’s Prince of Egypt five or six. And, of course, I’d read the story in Exodus two or three…hundred times.

If you’ve read my biblical novels, you know how much I LOVE research. The first three to six months of any new project is spent delving into ancient texts, archaeology, culture, and commentaries—before I ever write a word. But before beginning each day’s historical research, I read the biblical text repeatedly to be sure what I find lines up with God’s Word.

How can I describe my delight when fascinating details in historical documents bring new insight and deeper understanding to Scripture? (I have the best job in the world!)

Today, I get to share some of that joy with a few surprises I discovered while researching The Pharaoh’s Daughter.

Surprise #1

Egyptians (and Israelite slaves) drank beer!

I remember when I was a little girl and realized for the first time that Jesus drank wine. My mom explained that they didn’t have clean water to drink, so wine was like soda pop or juice for them. Well, it’s sort of the same principle for the Egyptians. Their hot, desert climate was watered only by the Nile and was more conducive to growing grain than grapes. They made beer with fermented grain, called mash. Only Pharaoh and wealthy noblemen drank imported wine until later royals incorporated vineyards into their gardens. Slaves and peasants drank a light golden beer with lower alcohol content, while the king’s breweries produced darker beer, flavored with various fruits and spices.

Surprise #2

Straw wasn’t always an ingredient for bricks.

In Exodus 5, after Moses and Aaron made their first plea for the Hebrews’ release, Pharaoh commanded the slaves to gather their own straw while maintaining their full quota of bricks. I had always assumed they put the straw IN the bricks, but research proved differently. Though straw or sand might be mixed with mudbricks to prevent cracking, most ancient bricks did not use straw in the mixture. Instead, finely chopped straw was rubbed on the hands or dusted over the surface of the bricks to keep the mud from sticking, thereby making the process go much faster.

MesuJerusalem Camel Rides 001

Surprise #3

Camels were used for milk, not as pack animals.

Though camels are smelly, grouchy, spitting beasts, I love them—and they get a prominent mention in my books. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered camels were rather rare in ancient Egyptian. Visiting merchants used them as pack animals, but only poorer Egyptians used them—as a source of milk. Eee-gad!

Were You Surprised?

Did you know ancient Israelites drank beer, made bricks without straw, and used camels for milk? I hope you’ll pick up a copy of The Pharaoh’s Daughter and find more great surprises in the story of Moses.

You can link up any of your own blog posts and maybe garner some new readers, and you can also hop around and meet some other authors and avid readers.
    Tina

  133. My favorite cookie is actually a homemade one my Great Grandma use to make before she died in 2012. Every time Grandma now makes them I think of Great Grandma. They are actually one of the plainest cookies in the world, I don’t have the recipe yet since Grandma hasn’t dished on that one, but it made with a brown sugar cookie dough base and has honeynut cheerios.
    I found that I’d already done entries 2 & 3 :)
Thank you for hosting a stop on this hunt!

    Blessings!
    Jasmine

  134. I did both. Thanks so much for doing the scavenger hunt. I’m having lots of fun.

  135. It’s so hard to choose ONE favorite! But I make these triple chocolate pudding cookies that are SO good! My family loves them! And so do I. :) But I do really love Oreos too! I can’t let myself get them often though because I’ll eat them too fast!

  142. So many favorite cookies — but Oreos is one (loved the new red velvet version). I can eat cookies any time, any place!

  143. My favorite cookie is Vienna Fingers. First you take the top off, eat it, than you eat the bottom half that as the icing on it.

  144. I like Pecan Sandies, because they don’t taste quite so sweet as other cookies.
I don’t eat them anywhere special, just wherever I am.

  145. I love to eat homemade peanut butter cookies (baked thin and not too dark, with the criss-cross fork tine marks in the center of them) with a glass of ice-cold whole milk!

  146. I tried to “like” your page on FB but they have me restricted for one month. I have appealed this action & asked for an explanation but they haven’t responded yet. Odd for this to happen after I “liked” less than 10 pages of authors participating in this scavenger hunt. Meanwhile, please allow me the opportunity to be entered in your bonus giveaway. Thanks!

  152. My favorite cookies (other than homemade ones) are the Oreos that come from Canada – they are different than their American counterparts! – and another Canadian cookie, Fudgee-o. Mesu, fact #2 was the most interesting to me, since I also thought that the straw would be mixed into the bricks.
P.S. – The animation fan in me has to let you know that it’s actually DreamWorks Animation that did The Prince of Egypt, not Disney. Quick fact: 20th Century Fox’s Anastasia (1997) is also often mistaken as a Disney film. ;-)

Thank you.

  167. My favorite cookies are chocolate chip, made crispy not soft, and to eat them with a glass of milk. I subscribed to your newsletter.

  168. My favorite cookies have got to be Oreos. They are best when dunked in milk, but I must say that crushing them up and mixing them with cream cheese and then dipping the whole thing in chocolate is a pretty close second. I subscribed to your newsletter.

  169. Favorite cookie.. Hmm. that could be hard. But probably a soft gingersnap cookie dipped in white chocolate. Yum.. Liked your FB page and signed up for the newsletter :)

I read my first book of yours a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it! I’m excited to read the rest!!

  177. It is so hard to pick just one favorite cookie! For store bought, Mint Milanos and Oreos dipped in milk. For homemade, chocolate chips or oatmeal. They have to be soft not crisp and while I like milk with them, I don’t dip them :)

  178. I didn’t not realize that Oreos have been around for that long. Thank you for sharing the history behind them! I love cookies, but mostly I love homemade cookies. 183. My what a difficult question. I love my homemade Oatmeal Craisin, White Chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven. At my favorite little cookie making place, they have these large coconut chocolate chip cookies that makes me think of a Mounds candy but store bought I have to go with the vanilla oreos.

For some weird reason I hate the chocolate oreos. I don’t like the taste of them…lol. But for me, I love to eat cookies as I read. Especially on a cold or rainy day that I can snuggle down with a cup of hot cocoa, a warm quilt and I’m sure my cats will be there too.

Thank You for playing along with us in the hunt and the chance to win the book and oreos. It was interesting to learn so much about your researching and I loved your other book In the Shadow of Jezebel. I did a wonderful review on it for my followers and I look forward to reading more of your books in the future.

    In Kind Regards,
    Tricia

  184. Oh, this is one of the hardest questions I have ever had to answer! ;) I have a hard time deciding what my favorite cookie is. Boughten cookie–I love duplex and most any flavor of Oreo.
